No. 169. The Chateau Saint Georges. Bourges
Two photographs on paper
80 × 120 cm each, 2024

Edition of 5 + 2 artist’s prints

From the series Hotel beds, begun in 2018.

I present here two photographs from my hotel bed series, which I began in 2018 and which now comprises more than 170 images. Taken during my travels, the works show hotel beds in two different states: as I find them when entering the room, and after one night.

Within just a few hours, the hotel room shifts from a semi-public place into an intimate space. The bed, initially prepared in a standardized way, is altered by the presence of the traveller. Sheets become rumpled, personal belongings appear on the bedside table or elsewhere in the room, and traces of a temporary stay inscribe themselves into the situation.

These before-and-after images open up a dialogue between the public and the intimate. They reveal how quickly a neutral space becomes personal — and how the viewer’s gaze itself becomes part of this quiet transformation.
